Just like the C chord, there a a few different ways to play D. We usually learn it first high up on the neck, using the open D string and the 2nd, 3rd and 2nd fret of the 3,2 and 1 string respectively. This is an easy one to remember because your fingers make a “triangle” shape. The notes here are D (open D string) A (2nd fret of G), D (3rd fret of B) and F# (2nd fret of E).
We can also play the D chord in the 5th position with our 1st finger on the 5th fret of 5 string and our 3rd finger barring the 7th fret of 2,3 and 4. This is a useful shape for sure!
We can also play this “F” shape in the 10th position, using our 1st finger on the 10th fret of 1 and 2 strings, our 2nd finger on the 11th fret of 3 string and our 3rd finger on the 12th fret of the 4 string.
